Burger Edge @ The Dining Hall, Melbourne Central

Another halal burger place in the city! We were thrilled to hear that Burger Edge at The Dining Hall serves halal burgers. According to their website, "Burger Edge uses only halal beef and chicken, but is not a halal environment. They use salami, ham and bacon in their burgers. Therefore customers are requested to alert counter staff if this is an issue to avoid cross contamination on grills and preparation areas". So please double-check or ask when you order.

We've tried their beef burger with halal beef rasher, spicy chicken burger and chicken tandoori salad. I must say they were pretty tasty!

Burger Edge is located at the upper floor food court in Melbourne Central.

Papparoti in Melbourne!

There's this bun called Mexican Bun.  It's mocha crusted on the outside, and soft, fluffy and buttery in the inside.  And it's so good!  In Malaysia, each time we walk pass by a shop that sells these buns, the aroma is so tempting that it's hard not to stop and buy one.  A couple of months back, I had one of those missing-food-from-home craving for this bun.  The thought of the warm, baked bun was just so tempting that I thought I had to learn to make some myself.  To my luck, on one of the days that we were walking along Elizabeth St, I saw a small sign that said Papparoti will be opening in Melbourne!

We finally found time to visit Papparoti last week.  The buns are Halal, and they taste just like the ones back home.  The buns are AUD2.20 each.  Not to forget, we had them with a cup of hot Teh Tarik.  They also sell some Halal gelato.  The one we tried was Durian Gelato and it was truly delicious.

Papparoti is located on 349 Elizabeth St, right opposite of Melbourne Central.
They have a couple of outdoor seating, otherwise you can have your Papparoti buns to go.

For more info, visit their website here.

Lord of the Fries: Chapel St

Few weeks back, we were invited to visit the newly opened Lord of the Fries on Chapel St.  It's always great to have more Halal and vegetarian eateries outside of the city!  Since they launched their Mark sauce recently, that's exactly what we had: Mark burgers and fries with Mark sauce.  The taste of the new sauce is quite tasty.  As for the burger, I think I prefer the Spicy one with Jalapenos... but I'm sure everyone has their own fave sauce and burger :) Now our friends just told us that their nuggets are pretty good too! We'll surely give that a try next time.

Lord of the Fries is located at 170 Chapel St, Windsor.  For more info, you can visit their website.

Chilli Padi Mamak Kopitiam

It has definitely been a while since we visited any new Halal eateries around Melbourne.  With Malaysian food trends coming into Australia within the last few years (not to mention also on Masterchef!), another Kopitiam-concept eatery has opened in Flemington.

Our good friends Shaliz and Din introduced us to Chilli Padi Mamak Kopitiam.  Thanks to them Walk Walk Melbourne can now add another Halal cafe into our collection :)

Chilli Padi Mamak Kopitiam is located at 295 Racecourse Road, Flemington.

Secret Recipe Now Also in Melbourne Central

This Secret Recipe is located on the third level of Melbourne Central, next to Nando's.

Don't forget to get the combo offer of Coffee + Cake for AUD5.50  =)

Lord of the Fries

So you're in the city, and suddenly you have a craving for some burgers.  But Halal McDonald's is a tram ride away, and you just don't want to ride that far.  And maybe you've had enough of Nando's (but we always love Nando's!).

Well maybe now you can try the Veggie Burgers from Lord of the Fries!  It's all vegetarian, and they actually taste quite good.  I like their Spicy Burger, with jalapeno peppers, yummm.

The one located at the laneway into Melbourne Central has received a Halal Certification.  I've read across the net that since Lord of the Fries use vegetarian ingredients, their food should be suitable for the halal diet.  You can find LOTF scattered around the CBD: Elizabeth St, Flinders St Station & Melbourne Central.

IndoLicious @ Lygon St

Last Friday, while it was raining, we walked through the winds to have lunch at a new place (such an effort to walk outside in the wet and cold!).  IndoLicious is located at Lygon St, next to Lazzat.  I suppose the restaurant isn't that new because the owner said that they have opened for a year (or maybe they just recently opened 'there', I didn't ask).  WWM hasn't visited any new halal eateries for quite a while, so I was thrilled to visit it and have lunch there (thanks to friends who asked me to join them for lunch).

Prices for ala carte are pretty much similar with other Malaysian/Indonesian restaurants.  They do have Nasi Campur (sorry, didn't get the price).  We wanted to try the ala carte menu, so IndoLicious recommended us to try their Nasi Iga Penyet - that's rice with deep fried beef spareribs and sambal.

There it is!  Looks delicious, right? Yummy...  The serving of the ribs were very generous I would say, and they were very tender, so you'd have no problem eating them with fork and spoon.  The sambal could've been spicier for my liking (suka pedas2!), but it was still good.

So if you want to try out IndoLicious, it's just a walking distance away from the CBD.

Indolicious is located on 114 Lygon St, Carlton.

My Restaurant @ High St, near Chapel St

My Restaurant is one of the earliest Halal Eatery that we came to know about during our short stay at High St when we first arrived in Melbourne two years ago. Tucked not far from the corner of Chapel St and High St, My Restaurant serves a pretty good briyani (simple and not too heavy, just the way we like our briyani). We've never tried their rice and lunch menu (as we're usually around the city during the day), so if any of you have tried their rice dishes, do share with us your experience. Their roti canai and tosai are another good options if you're looking for something light.

I found their opening hours via The Age's Epicure:

Sun-Thurs noon-3pm, 5pm-11pm; Fri, Sat 5pm-midnight

My Restaurant is located on 186 High St, Windsor.

Mama Wong's Kitchen @ Corner of Flinders St & Exhibition St

We visited Mama Wong's Kitchen back in May, after a Khatib at RMIT informed the Friday Prayer Jama'ah that it is another Halal restaurant in the city. The photos have been in my iPhone, and I really thought that I've uploaded them, but actually, I haven't (lucky that they're still there!)

Mama Wong's sell a range of Chinese and Malaysian food. You can check out their website for more details. Go to http://mamawongs.com.au/

So here are some images from our visit.

Mama Wong's Kitchen is located at the corner of Flinders St and Exhibition St - exactly at the corner and it will be pretty easy to spot.

Melbourne CBD Walk Walk Melbourne Map - Halal Map Melbourne

Yes! It's finally almost here! We're finally on it: our Melbourne CBD Walk Walk Melbourne Map, a.k.a Halal Map Melbourne!

Going back to the first entry of this blog back in 29 November 2009, it is now almost reaching 2 years since Walk Walk Melbourne gets online to share about Melbourne, and most importantly, the Malaysian and Muslim version of the city - which is what we would call our niche. This so-called project started out as part of my (Kayla's) parallel research project, as a way to understand cities differently. In a sense, it was for me to read Melbourne from different lenses - as a Malaysian, Muslim, student, temporary resident, and tourist all at the same time.

I started collecting and mapping places that I go to in and around Melbourne, as a Muslim and as a Malaysian. What started as collecting ordinary routine places; to finding the necessities such as Halal eateries, Halal grocers, and prayer facilities; to searching for new places to visit and explore, Walk Walk Melbourne begins to reveal these other 'layers' of Melbourne. That's what makes cities rich in characters.

We thank you very much for your support, feedback, and suggestions. Knowing that the site is useful to others motivates us to continue doing it, and who knows, we'll soon tread the globe with the same mission! Watch out, Lonely Planet! :D

So while you wait for our map to finish being constructed, do continue to browse through the blog and share it with others. Meanwhile, we'll be thinking of ways of how the map can be more than just a map, and most importantly, how we can make it fit into your wallets, purses and little pockets so that you'll always have your Walk Walk Map with you ;)

Handbook for Muslim Students - Salaam Monash

I was Googling for information on where the Eid Prayer would be conducted this year (haven't found any updated or recent info though), and I came across a Handbook for Muslim Students by Monash University. It has a list of Mosques and Prayer Centres, Halal food, Halal grocery outlets, Muslim medical and dental practitioners and more! How great, right? Click here SALAAM MONASH for the guide.

Bazaar Ramadhan @ PaRam Melbourne! Some pics from last weekends

Salam & Good Day to All our Visitors :)

We know a lot of you here are searching for Bazaar Ramadhan in Melbourne, or as some call it in Malaysia, "param" - a casual abbreviation for Pasar Ramadhan. Ramadhan Bazaar has been a part of the Malaysian culture for years now, and I think every where we go in this world, every time Ramadhan comes we always want to find that piece of home, however small or big it may be. Whether it's the congregational Tarawih prayers, or the Ramadhan Bazaar with the stalls, the crowds and the aroma of cooked food!

So thanks to Bazaar Bersama and Malaysia Hall, this year we have two Bazaar Ramadhan locations - one in Fawkner and one in Prahran. It's not big, but I would say it's full of heart :) Much thanks go to the vendors, who are students and families residing here in Melbourne, for without their efforts to become vendors and cook/bake/make all those delicious Malaysian food and delicacies, I don't think they will be a bazaar at all. Hope to see more of you there next time.

Here are some shots from yesterday's bazaar at Malaysia Hall.

And here are some from the Pre-Ramadhan Bazaar at Fawkner last Saturday.
