Nasi Lemak Melbourne Map

I did this for one of my mapping projects for my research, and I thought I'd share it with WWM friends out there. It's a collection of five (or was it six?) places that sell halal Nasi Lemak in Melbourne. This was done last year, so the Nasi Lemak collection has indeed grown, since there are new halal Malaysian eateries popping up in Melbourne.

So what we have here is the Nasi Lemak wrapping, which takes into the shape of how a typical Nasi Lemak is wrapped and sold in Malaysia - wrapped in newspapers and banana leaf. Inside, there is a map of Melbourne, with locations of the places. The map comes with six fold-out cards, and inside each, there is information about the name of the eatery, location, contact information and operation hours. Aside from the photos, I also documented my 'experience' eating each plate of Nasi Lemak (yes, almost like a food reviewer, just for the fun of it!). I created my own 'scales', like taste scale, serving size, how spicy is the sambal, the lemak-ness of the rice, and some other things like that.

That was an interesting experience, since Nasi Lemak is one of my favourite Malaysian food. And I think since I've started this, I can't stop collecting them! Who knows, maybe in the future there will be a collection of Nasi Lemak all over the world outside of Malaysia ;)

Tandir @ Melbourne Central

It used to be Kamil's Kebab, but it's now called Tandir. They still sell kebabs, but now with another addition: Chicken Briyani at AUD6.50 per plate.








Tandir is located inside Melbourne Central's upper food court. You can access through the external escalator at the corner of La Trobe and Swanston St, above the ice cream shop.

Norsiah's Kitchen

What's the best food that a Malaysian could ask for lunch in this cold weather? You got it: Nasi Campur served hot! So if you're looking for very affordable Nasi Campur in the CBD, Norsiah's Kitchen is the place. You can get a rice meal + 2 meat dishes + 1 vegie dish for AUD 6.50.

Secret Recipe @ Chapel St.

Finally, we visited Secret Recipe at Chapel St. Secret Recipe is a well-known cafe-restaurant in Malaysia, famous for its cheese cake and other range of cakes. But they also have meals on their menu - food for breakfast, lunch and dinner alike. We asked them before sitting about serving Halal food, and they said that all the meat and cakes are Halal, which makes everything in the menu Halal. We also found this article on their opening and Halal status online.

You can easily identify Secret Recipe located on 247 Chapel St., Prahran.



We like the spaciousness and light-filled interior.



You can find a selection of Malaysian and Western dishes on the menu. It's a bit pricey, I must say.



Nasi Lemak with Rendang Ayam, no sambal. Rendang Ayam was tasty :) I was delighted to see the banana leaf.



Nasi Goreng and Satay. Nasi Goreng was so-so but we enjoyed the Chicken Satay.



All in all, there's a lot on the menu to try... tom yum, lamb shanks, and more.

Bright, Victoria

It's like a 'tradition' for Malaysians in Melbourne to go to Bright in Autumn. We've seen friends' photos of the colourful hues of autumn leaves and thought that we have got to check it out ourselves. Bright is located about 3.5 hours drive from Melbourne, towards Mt. Hotham and Falls Creek, located at the North-eastern part of Victoria. We went for a day trip, while some friends stayed overnight. If you're going for a day-trip, don't forget to pack up some lunch for a picnic, and bring a jacket along in case it gets a bit windy or cold. The time to go, as according to others, is during the dates of the Bright Autumn Festival. If you like parades, then it's probably a good to go during the festival, but if you just like to enjoy the country side, then anytime is fine. You can check out more info here, on Bright Victoria.
